My preliminary task

Preliminary task from Liam Woodridge on Vimeo.

This was our 2nd attempt of filming this task. This is because the first time we tried to film it the camera was giving us no audio feedback, we later found out that there was audio but the speaker on the camera was broken (How annoying)

For this task we had to get footage of a person walking into a room and having a short conversation with another person who is already sitting in the room. This seems like a very basic task, but it was only too see how we would edit it and what sort of camera shots we knew. I think it was an important task to do because it showed me and my groups weak areas.

My target audience

Target Audience

Basics

Age:                                        15-26

Gender:                                  Male

Socio-economic status:          C2DE

More information

Age:                                        I chose this age group because I think that they would be the most likely to enjoy our movie (Action-Thriller) this is because it is going to be a very stereotypical sort of movie and it will be easy for people of this age to understand. I am going on the thought that most people in this age group don’t want to watch a movie where they send the whole thing thinking and not seeing any action, saying that our aim will be to keep the audience guessing with but enough action to keep them interested.

Gender:                                 My group and I chose male because of the action element. This is because the stereotypical male will enjoy a movie much more if it has a strong element of action. On the other hand we do expect some women come to watch the film, even though it is not our main target audience.

Socio-economic status:         My film will be aimed at people in middle class and lower class because I don’t believe that people in higher class will want to see the type of movie that I am making also iI believe that people in middle class and lower class probably go to the cinema or buy movies more often because they are cheap and affordable and very entertaining also people in higher class may want to watch a film with a bit more of a story and not as fast paced.

Doing this task allowed me too see the sort of people I would aim my film at. It also helped rule out certain areas to film and almost certain forms action were ruled out because of this task

Our film synopsis

This film synopsis shows how our intro to the film connects to the rest of the movie, I think this helped me because I know how I can do something that may not make sense now but I know will make sense later

I have learnt that writing a synopsis can be really helpful in ideas of the beginning 2 minutes; I think that this process has been helpful.

What’s done is done

Our film is about a teenage boy (Jake) who was being bullied in his school (By the bullies of the school Robin, and Jim) and he was felt as though he could not escape. However one day after having a really bad day he decides to stand up to the gang leader of the bullies. He takes a hammer with him to scare off the bully and maybe hit him so that he would be left alone, but ends up hitting and killing him. Jake then tries to run away, we see him packing his stuff and walking away.

The film goes on to show how he struggles in life because of having to run from his previous life, he tries to hide his old identity but he cannot get away from the horror’s of his past. He starts having to run from the police and ends up travelling all over the country with no money and no home.

The film ends with him being caught by the police and taken to stand in court. He pleads that he did it in defence and that he had to do it because they were bullying him. But the judge does not believe that the other boy bullied him. Jake got 10 years imprisonment, and the movie ends with Jake being put into a jail cell.

New Genre

After further looking into the genre Action Thriller my group and I decided that it would be best not to do it, we did some quick research into other genres and found that a Drama would be the best suited genre for the sort of film we wanted to do. We are going to do some other research into this genre then try to get some footage, we are very excited about this and can't wait to get cracking.

Textual analysis

Memento

Credits fading from black to dark blue down to a almost white blue on a plain black screen, loud calm music (Plain bass, one note) The black fading on the word ‘Memento’ and coming into a image of a hand holding a developed picture. Around 40 seconds

There is an unidentified man, there is no emotion in his face other than looking tired and beaten up, holding a photograph of a bloody looking scene, and we are unable to make out who the person is or how they died. The character shakes the image and it un-develops (He shakes it 4 times over all) you can only see the last 3 letters of a tattoo on the mans hand (wedding ring). Credits running on the top of the image, guy taking picture

The music comes to a sudden stop when the photograph is taken, but it is taken backwards, the photographic paper gets dragged back into the camera when the flash goes. We still haven’t seen the other person, who we now know is it front of him on the floor. He is sweaty which could imply that he is stressed on tired for some reason. A close up on his face to show the emotion in his eyes. It is all in reverse.

He puts the camera back down beside him, close up of the main characters face then the camera shot jumps to a close up of blood dribbling up the wall. We see the empty shell of a bullet that has been shot then and some glasses that have been thrown off a persons face the shot changes to the main character putting his arm straight out and a silver gun flying back into his hand, the bullet start to roll back up to the gun and the glasses flick back to the man face as he gets up and the gun is put to the back of his head. He shoots the other guy in the head then he turns are shouts, which sounds like a plea of help.

This was probably done because the director was trying to create tension for the movie and to lure the audience into watching and focusing on the movie, It is designed to be very confusing.

First attempt at filming

Me and my film partner, Curtis Cragg, went out with a camera last Friday (30/9/11) to try and get some footage for our film. This turned out to be more difficult than we planned because the camera seemed to be to dark, this meant that all of the footage we had collected had to be deleted (We later realised it would have been best to keep it as evidence)
But luckily, after this, we realised that we must find a more lighted area or a do it earlier in the day. We originally wanted to film a horror movie but after this event we realised that we would not be able to make a movie that was at night, this obviously made our filming a horror much more difficult. Therefore we decided to film another genre which was either Thriller or Action
