What would be the audience for your media product?

This image shows you the sort of audience I think my media product would be aimed at. It has 3 sections; the basics, what they spend money on, and the sort of media they would consume. I have examples of most media consumptions.

The reason my target audience would be aged 15 to 22 is because the character is ages 17, this means that the older targeted audience may be able to relate to some of the struggles that our character is going through. Also the reason I believe are audience will also include 15 year old males is because they may use it to learn about behaviour and response that is permitted at the older age. They also would learn about the consequences.
The reason I believe my target audience would be interested in violent games is because our film has a very violent storyline and I think that the people who would enjoy watching this sort of film would be the sort that also enjoy playing violent games.

What kind of media institute might distribute your media product and why?

The media company I think would distribute my movie is Lionsgate. This is because they have distribute several other successful English films, such as; Daybreakers, Saw 3D, and the new 50/50. These movies were all UK based films that Lionsgate distributed and they went on to becoming very successful.
I believe Lionsgate would be able to distribute my British film better than a lot of the other distribution companies. The reason I believe this is because they are a British based company so they will know more about the economy and advertising of the UK, more so than an American company.

The film we have done would be classified as a ‘15’ by the BBFC, meaning that no one under the age of 15 will be allowed to view it whilst in the cinema, this is because of the violence and Language in the film. The BBFC states that in a ‘15’ film you are allowed to show strong violence but are not allowed to dwell on the pain or suffering of a single person. We followed this rules by only showing the infliction of the pain, we did not show the outcome of this pain. We believe that this makes the film a ‘15’

How does your media product represent particular social groups

This is a photograph of a spider graph I did to show how our film represents a certain social group. It also goes into the costume and body language of our main character all be it briefly.

The reason we chose a teenage male character is because they have a very negative stereotype, especially those who wear 'hoodies'. This stereotype shows male teenagers to have a very one tracked mind, resulting in them trying to complete one task to any extent. This is also linked to them being violent, because, it suggests that to complete the task they has set their minds on they have to violently bi-pass all the obstacles in the way.

The body language we used is fairly hard to see if you aren't looking for it. There were several small elements such as throwing the clothes onto the bag, that show a messy or nervous characteristic. This could show that he has made a mistake and is worried as to how the problem will be resolved

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge the conventions of real media products

The codes and conventions of a drama film are difficult to specify. However most drama films will involves the same basic things, such as: Both gang and single person violence, sex, alcohol and other drugs (Including illegal drug usage) relationship or family issues. I would suggest these as being key because in most drama films you will see several of these conventions.
My film sticks to this because it uses several of these conventions, this of course isn’t the only reason that it is a drama film. I think that my film predominantly follows the codes and conventions of an average drama film, I say this because the story is very common and easy to change up, however I think this storyline is the most effective to have chosen.
My group and I struggled to challenge the conventions of a Drama film, because there are so many. Having said this we did manage to challenge the conventional storyline because our main character is originally being bullied and we show that a good way to stop that is by retaliating towards them in a violent manner

Film Synopsis

This film synopsis shows how our intro to the film connects to the rest of the movie, I think this helped me because I know how I can do something that may not make sense now but I know will make sense later

I have learnt that writing a synopsis can be really helpful in ideas of the beginning 2 minutes; I think that this process has been helpful.

What’s done is done

Our film is about a teenage boy (Jake) who was being bullied in his school (By the bullies of the school Robin, and Jim) and he was felt as though he could not escape. However one day after having a really bad day he decides to stand up to the gang leader of the bullies. He takes a hammer with him to scare off the bully and maybe hit him so that he would be left alone, but ends up hitting and killing him. Jake then tries to run away, we see him packing his stuff and walking away.

The film goes on to show how he struggles in life because of having to run from his previous life, he tries to hide his old identity but he cannot get away from the horror’s of his past. He starts having to run from the police and ends up travelling all over the country with no money and no home.

The film ends with him being caught by the police and taken to stand in court. He pleads that he did it in defence and that he had to do it because they were bullying him. But the judge does not believe that the other boy bullied him. Jake got 10 years imprisonment, and the movie ends with Jake being put into a jail cell.

Main character profile

Doing this allowed my group and I too choose a main character that would best suit this profile. This was a very simple selection process because it is done predominantly on appearance

Distribution

Distribution

I think that the company that would produce and distribute my groups drama movie would be a company such a BBC films. This is because they have done other British drama movies that have gone international after a small time of being UK exclusive. I think that it would be best to start off being UK exclusive because we would find out if the movie is successful before putting in a larger amount of money for making the film international.

After we have had success in UK with BBC films we would try to contact a larger company that would distribute my movie internationally. We would try to use river road entertainment to get our movie to go international, this is an American company that have had other successful drama movies such as ‘Fair game’

This is a movie that was produced and Distributed by River road entertainment.
It has been an international hit.
Finding a company that would distribute our product proved to be more difficult that we expected. However once we had found a company we found that they actually were perfect for what we wanted, we chose River Road because they are a English distributor that would help our film get national fame.

Our pictureboard presentation

This is how we planned out the first part of our film. We took several different angles of each shot to find which would be the most effective, we settled on these because we believe that it would have the best effect on our audience.

BBFC regulations (15)

Regulation Research

BBFC

The BBFC, or the British Board of Film Classification, are the company that decide on the certification of a movie. They decide whether a film will be U, PG, 12, 12A, 15, or 18.They also decide whether a movie will be allowed for viewing or not some movies are too gory or gruesome for being released, some times it will be because a child get visibly hurt or some reason of that sort.
U
Pg
12/12A
15
Discrimination: It is not allowed to be about discrimination but can have small elements.
Drugs: Drugs usage is allowed but it must not promote the misuse of any drugs, including easily accessible drugs (Such as solvents)
Horror: Violence is allowed as long as it isn’t sexualised or sadistic
Imitable behaviour: Self destructive behaviour must not dwell on elements that can be copied
Nudity: Nudity is potentially allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. Nudity from a non-sexual or educational perspective is allowed
Violence: Not allowed strong sadistic or sexually violent scenes, references are allowed but must be discreet and have a strong sexual context. Violence can be strong but cannot stay on infliction of pain or injury
      18

Doing this task allowed me too see what sort of content we could have in our film so that it stays as only a 15, if I did not do this the film may have become too violent and I would have lost most of my target audience

Our questionnaire and 1 set of results (Video)

Questionnaire from Liam Woodridge on Vimeo.

This is the video me and my partner (Curtis Cragg) Made from the results of our video. It only has one answer from each of our participants but we chose those because they were the most common answers. From doing this I learnt what people expect from a drama film, and that helps me and my group with our task.

My preliminary task

Preliminary task from Liam Woodridge on Vimeo.

This was our 2nd attempt of filming this task. This is because the first time we tried to film it the camera was giving us no audio feedback, we later found out that there was audio but the speaker on the camera was broken (How annoying)

For this task we had to get footage of a person walking into a room and having a short conversation with another person who is already sitting in the room. This seems like a very basic task, but it was only too see how we would edit it and what sort of camera shots we knew. I think it was an important task to do because it showed me and my groups weak areas.

My target audience

Target Audience

Basics

Age:                                        15-26

Gender:                                  Male

Socio-economic status:          C2DE

More information

Age:                                        I chose this age group because I think that they would be the most likely to enjoy our movie (Action-Thriller) this is because it is going to be a very stereotypical sort of movie and it will be easy for people of this age to understand. I am going on the thought that most people in this age group don’t want to watch a movie where they send the whole thing thinking and not seeing any action, saying that our aim will be to keep the audience guessing with but enough action to keep them interested.

Gender:                                 My group and I chose male because of the action element. This is because the stereotypical male will enjoy a movie much more if it has a strong element of action. On the other hand we do expect some women come to watch the film, even though it is not our main target audience.

Socio-economic status:         My film will be aimed at people in middle class and lower class because I don’t believe that people in higher class will want to see the type of movie that I am making also iI believe that people in middle class and lower class probably go to the cinema or buy movies more often because they are cheap and affordable and very entertaining also people in higher class may want to watch a film with a bit more of a story and not as fast paced.

Doing this task allowed me too see the sort of people I would aim my film at. It also helped rule out certain areas to film and almost certain forms action were ruled out because of this task

New Genre

After further looking into the genre Action Thriller my group and I decided that it would be best not to do it, we did some quick research into other genres and found that a Drama would be the best suited genre for the sort of film we wanted to do. We are going to do some other research into this genre then try to get some footage, we are very excited about this and can't wait to get cracking.

Textual analysis

Memento

Credits fading from black to dark blue down to a almost white blue on a plain black screen, loud calm music (Plain bass, one note) The black fading on the word ‘Memento’ and coming into a image of a hand holding a developed picture. Around 40 seconds

There is an unidentified man, there is no emotion in his face other than looking tired and beaten up, holding a photograph of a bloody looking scene, and we are unable to make out who the person is or how they died. The character shakes the image and it un-develops (He shakes it 4 times over all) you can only see the last 3 letters of a tattoo on the mans hand (wedding ring). Credits running on the top of the image, guy taking picture

The music comes to a sudden stop when the photograph is taken, but it is taken backwards, the photographic paper gets dragged back into the camera when the flash goes. We still haven’t seen the other person, who we now know is it front of him on the floor. He is sweaty which could imply that he is stressed on tired for some reason. A close up on his face to show the emotion in his eyes. It is all in reverse.

He puts the camera back down beside him, close up of the main characters face then the camera shot jumps to a close up of blood dribbling up the wall. We see the empty shell of a bullet that has been shot then and some glasses that have been thrown off a persons face the shot changes to the main character putting his arm straight out and a silver gun flying back into his hand, the bullet start to roll back up to the gun and the glasses flick back to the man face as he gets up and the gun is put to the back of his head. He shoots the other guy in the head then he turns are shouts, which sounds like a plea of help.

This was probably done because the director was trying to create tension for the movie and to lure the audience into watching and focusing on the movie, It is designed to be very confusing.

First attempt at filming

Me and my film partner, Curtis Cragg, went out with a camera last Friday (30/9/11) to try and get some footage for our film. This turned out to be more difficult than we planned because the camera seemed to be to dark, this meant that all of the footage we had collected had to be deleted (We later realised it would have been best to keep it as evidence)
But luckily, after this, we realised that we must find a more lighted area or a do it earlier in the day. We originally wanted to film a horror movie but after this event we realised that we would not be able to make a movie that was at night, this obviously made our filming a horror much more difficult. Therefore we decided to film another genre which was either Thriller or Action
